BAR-NABHA. Aramaic
form of biblical Barnabas
(q.v.), meaning "son of exhortation," or "son of Nebho."
The name,
though Aramaic, is strangely heathen for a Levite. In Acts 4:36 it
is explained as a surname given "by the apostles" to the
Cypriote convert, whose real name was Joseph. Apparently by
combination of the Aramaic bar ("son") with the Hebrew naba
("to prophesy" or "exhort") the sense "Son of
exhortation" is obtained. The name is really formed from the
Syrian divinity Nebo or Nabu (cf. Nebuchadnezzar, Nabonassar)
with the prefix Bar (cf. Barabbas, Bartimaeus, Bartholomew,
Bar-Jesus). (Commentary on the Epistle of Paul to the
Galatians, Bacon, 1909)
