BAR-TIMAI. Aramaic
name from which came biblical Bartimaeus
(q.v.), meaning "son of Timai," from bar "son"
and "Timai,"
a personal name of uncertain origin. Greek timaios means
"honorable." Aramaic timai means "unclean."
But
of the names Timaios,
Timaeus,
and Timai, it is not known which derived from which, or from what
word the original came.
*1050.—"And
he (Timai Bar-Timai) rose, and took up his garment, and
came to Jesus."
It is much more in accordance with the habits of
Orientals, so far as I have observed them, to put on their upper
garments (like Simon Peter in Jn 217) than to take it off
when they are summoned into the presence of a superior... (Expository
Times,
v.12, 1901)
