form of biblical Bartholomew,
Greek Batholomaios
(q.v.), meaning "son of Tolmai," from bar "son" and "Tolmai,"
a personal name meaning "furrows."
The synoptic
writers, it is true, make no mention of a Nathanael; but, in their lists
of the Twelve Apostles, one of them is always inscribed under his family
name only, Bartholomew, Bar-Tolmai, that is, son of Tolmai... (Christ,
