BARABBAS (Βαραββᾶς). Biblical.
[N.T. Greek Barabbas, Aramaic Bar
Abba = "son of a father"].
A robber who had made an
insurrection in which he had committed murder. He was "a
notable prisoner" when Jesus was arrested. Pilate, anxious
that Jesus should be released, but not prepared to run any risk to
effect his purpose, offered the Jews the option of releasing Jesus or
Barabbas, believing that they could not possibly be so lost to shame as
to choose Barabbas; but he was disappointed in the result, for the
people, incited by the chief priests, clamoured for the release of
Barabbas, and then for the crucifixion of Jesus (Matt. xxvii. 16, 17,
20, 21, 26; Mark xv. 7, 11, 15; Luke xxiii. 18; John xviii. 40). (The
Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
