BARTHOLOMEW. Biblical.
[Gk. Bartholomaios
(q.v.), from Aramaic Bar Tolmai = "son of Tolmai"].
Tolmai means "furrows." Usage: America, Australia,
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.
One of the twelve Apostles
(Matt. x. 3; Mark iii. 18; Luke vi. 14; Acts i. 13). As in
the first three of these passages the name of Bartholomew
immediately follows that of Philip and nearly does so in the fourth, he
was probably the same person as Nathanael,
who was led to Christ by Philip (John i. 45, 46). If so, then his
birthplace was Cana of Galilee (John xxi. 2). He was highly
commended by Jesus as an Israelite indeed in whom there was no guile (i.
47-51). (The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
