BASILIOS (Βασιλιος). Variant
form of Greek Basileios
(q.v.), meaning "kingly."
Basilios, the Great, was
born at Caesarea 329 A.D.
He is one of the "fathers" of the church. He studied
philosophy at Athens, and afterwards became an advocate in his native
city. He was converted and formed a Monastic society 370 A.D.
He succeeded Eusebius as bishop of Caesarea, and in the Greek and other
Oriental churches he is highly honored as one of their chief
saints. He died 379 A.D.
He is said to have introduced the three monastic vows: Obedience,
chastity and poverty. (History of the Syrian Nation and the Old
Evangelical-Apolostolic Church of the East, &c., Malech, 1910)
