| BEL-SARRA-UZUR. "Bel
protect the King." At the fall of the empire, joint king of
Babylon with his father, Nabonidus. He reigned but for a very few
years, as immediately after the defeat of the Babylonians by Cyrus, king
of Persia, Babylon was blockaded and taken after a short siege, in which
Bel-sarra-uzur was slain. Soon after that his father, who had
abandoned the throne by flying to Borsippa, surrendered to the Medes and
Persians, by whom he was sent into exile into Carmania, where he died; and
the second Babylonian empire ceased to exist. Belsharussar or Bel-sarra-uzur
was the Belshazzar
of Hebrew history.
