| BEL-ZIKIR-ISKUN. A
King of Assyria. He succeeded Assurbanipal, but his relationship to
him is not known. He was simultaneously attacked by Phraortes king
of Media, Psammetichus king of Egypt, and the revolted chiefs of
Babylon. By the aid, however, of his general, Nabopolassar, he
defeated the Elamites and subdued the Babylonians, whilst himself repulsed
the Medes at the battle of Rhages, where their king was slain. The
Medes soon recovered their position, and the king of Assyria was only
delivered from his foes by an incursion of the savage Scythians into
Media, and afterwards into Assyria, where they allied themselves with him
for a time, but after his death, and indeed at the close of his reign,
plundered and ravaged the country. Bel-zikir-iskun was succeeded by
Assur-ebil-ili, the son of Assurbanipal.
