meaning "Bel protect the

Belshazzar, the last king of
Babylon. According to the well-known scriptural narrative, he was
warned of his coming doom by the handwriting on the wall which was
interpreted by Daniel, and was slain during a splendid feast in his

Belshazzar,
the governor of the city of Kisesim. He revolted against Sargon
II., by whom he was captured and led into slavery, and the name of his
city changed to Karmasmasu.
