| BENHADAD. Benhadad
I., king of Syria, and the son of Hadad, the king of Edom or Idumea. (An
Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876). Benhadad II., the son
and successor of Benhadad I., king of Syria. He was the leader of
the Syrian confederacy against Shalmaneser II., whom he encountered,
together with his allies, with an army of between 80,000 and 90,000
men. The king of Assyria, however, defeated them all at Qarqar, but
was unable to pursue his victory, owing to his own severe losses.
Benhadad was more successful in his wars with Omri, king of Samaria, whom
he compelled to pay tribute. Benhadad III., a king of
Damascus. He was three times defeated by Jehoash, king of Israel,
who recovered from him the cities taken by his father. He had but a
short reign, and was succeeded by Mariah, the last independent king of
Damascus. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
