name composed of the elements bog "god" and dan
"gift," hence "God's gift." (History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884) Usage: Bulgaria, Poland, Serbia,
Ukraine.
Bogdan Joseph Zaleski was a
Polish poet, born in 1802 in the Ukraine village, Bohaterka. In
1820 he was sent to the university of Warsaw, where he had Goszezynski
as a fellow-student. He died in exile. His most interesting poem
was his "Spirit of the Steppe." (Encyclopedia Britannica, v.21, 1911)
In 1648 Bogdan Kmelnitski, a sotnik
(commander) of a Polish reestrovöe voisko or
"registered" (regular) regiment, headed a rising of the
Zaporozhki Cossacks against the Rietch Pospolitaia, and received support
from the peasantry of Little Rus, who were only too eager to rise
against their masters, the Polish and Polonised Russian magnates. (A
