BOHDAN (Богдан). A
variant form of Slavic Bogdan
(q.v.), meaning "God's gift." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884). Usage: Bohemia (Czech Republic), Poland, Slovakia,
Ukraine.
Bohdan Khmelnytsky (d. 1657), was a hetman of the
Zaporoxhian Cossack Hetmanate of Ukraine. Bohdan Paczynski (d,
2007), was a Polish astronomer. (Wiki)
Among this people there now
arose a man with a grievance, Bohdan Chmielnicki. His
farm had been burned and his infant son slain by a Polish noble; and he
could obtain no redress. Before the King himself it had been shown that
he had no right to own land; and the King was not able to help
him. But Wladislaw put a sword in his hand, and told him,
"You are a soldier now," and Bohdan served in his army.
(Poland, Slocombe, 1916)
