BUZIBA. Ganda name, meaning "night,"
from ziba "close of day; night." (Elements of Luganda
Grammar, Crabtree, 1902). The word occurs in a
Bantu proverb, and is also the name of a tribe.

obude 14, constantly used in indications of time. Obude
buziba is, literally, "the time of day becomes stopped"
(as a bottle with a cork: the Manuel de Langue Luganda renders,
"le moment se bouche" te-bwa-lwa),
Negative Far Past, agreeing with obude. The whole
phrase means "it was not long before it got dark." (Introductory
Sketch of the Bantu Languages, Werner, 1919)
... Peace now began to
dawn. Kabba Rega, having failed in an attack on the Toru posts,
thought it well to make friends of those whom he had found too powerful
to defy. The Buzida chiefs of Southern Buddu followed his example,
and from all sides the country people, who had hitherto not known which
side to take, plucked up courage as soon as they saw that the Wa-Ingleza
were in earnest... (The Story of Africa and Its Explorers, Brown,
v.4, 1896)
