BIL. m.
"The
Lord." A Himyaritic deity. He may probably have been the
Bel of the Chaldeans. (An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
BIL. f.
"The waning moon." In
Scandinavian mythology, the sister of Hiuki
(q.v.). They were children of Widfinur.
... Mani was also accompanied
by Hiuki, the waxing, and Bil, the waning moon, two children whom he had
snatched from earth where a cruel father forced them to carry water all
night. Our ancestors fancied they saw these children, the original
"Jack and Jill," with their pail, darkly outlined upon the
moon. (Myths of Northern Lands, Guerber, 1895)
