CANDACE. Biblical.
African. Egyptian. This is the Latin form of Greek Kandake
(q.v.), a name that is probably of Ethiopian Shendi origin, meaning "the mistress of
Chendi." (Cyclopaedia of Biblical, Theological, and Ecclesiastical
Literature, M'Clintock, v.2, 1894). Usage: America, Canada, England,
Ethiopia, Guyana.
Candace Helaine Cameron, an American actress and author.
Candace Charles, a Guyanese beauty ambassador. Candace
Robb, an English historical novelist. (Wiki)
CANDACE. There was a
Cleopatra surnamed Candace. She was the wife of Soter, and the
mother of the lady Sensaos. (An Archaic Dictionary,
Cooper, 1876).
CANDACE
[Greek Kandake].
A queen of
Ethiopia, i.e., probably, of Meroe, in southern Nubia. A eunuch of
great authority at her court, being converted to Christianity when on a
visit to Palestine through the instrumentality of Philip the evangelist,
seems to have introduced his new faith into that African region (Acts
viii. 26-39). Strabo, Dion Cassius, and Pliny all concur in
stating that Meroe in the first century of the Christian era was
governed by a succession of queens, each called Candace. (The Sunday
School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
