| CATALIN. Spanish-Basque
form of Catherine (q.v.), meaning
"pure." (Guide ou manuel de la Conversation et du Style
Épistolaire Français-Basque, J.P.D. 1876). This is the correct spelling for
Catalina de Erauso, a 17th-century Basque nun, known as "the
Nautico-Military Nun of Spain." She escaped from a convent and
lived as a man for many years, even serving time in the Spanish army in
America. (Eclectic Magazine, May-Aug, 1847)
