CHELINDA.
A Latin form of French Chelinde
(q.v.), an Arthurian romance name of uncertain etymology, but possibly meaning
"a boat," from French chaland. See Donkin's note
below.
... This proved a lucky
circumstance; for the lady was not only surprizingly handsome, but
daughter to the King of Babylon, who had betrothed her to the
Emperor of Persia, whither she was bound; when the ship that carried her
met with a dreadful hurricane, and she alone survived the whole
crew. Her name was Chelinda; the beautiful and complaisant
Princess was a few days after married to Sadoc. (An Entire New
Collection of Romances and Novels, Never Before Published,
Fielding-Walker, 1780)
Chaland Fr. a
flat-bottomed boat, a transport, O.Fr. chalandre, O.Cat. xelandrin,
L.L. chelandium chelinda zalandria, M.Gr. χελάνδιον. These boats
were chiefly used by the Byzantines, and prob. derived their name from
χέλυδρος a turtle. Fr. chaland, Sp.
calan a trafficker are from chaland
a boat, cf. barguigner from barca. Others derive chaland from
calo
(Papias: calones negotiatores) and make the sense of boat a secondary
one. But the form will hardly suit this etymology. (An
Etymological Dictionary of the Romance Languages, Donkin, 1864)
