CLARABELLA. Italian
name meaning "bright beauty" or "famous beauty," from Latin Clara "clear,
bright" or "famous" and Bella
"beautiful."
... I think it extremely
probable, also, that Shakespeare got his name Claribel from Spenser, whose
"Faërie Queene" had appeared some twenty years before "The
Tempest" was written, although of course we are to consider always
that the name may have been found to Shakespeare's hand in his
source-play or novel; for the name Clarabella was probably a thousand
years old when Shakespeare was born... Spenser's story will always
impress deeply the heart of poets, as does the somewhat similar poem of
Keats about the murdered lover and the pot of basil, or Dante's tale of
Paolo and Francesca, or Shakespeare's Othello. (Poet Lore, A Magazine of
Letters, Porter-Clarke, v.4, 1892).
