| CANOPUS. A
Greco-Egyptian deity in the form of a human-headed vase, really that of
the funereal god Amset, one of the four infernal deities who had charge of
the viscera of the dead.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876). ... There are many
traditions as to the origin of the name Canopus, the oldest, and perhaps
the most authentic, being that the origin is Coptic and means "golden
earth." (Popular Astronomy, v.23, 1915).
