CASPAR. Dutch
and German form of English Jasper
(q.v.), Spanish Gaspar
(q.v.), a Magi name, possibly meaning "treasure master," or
"jasper."
Caspar,
master of the horse to the baron of Arnheim. Mentioned in
Donnerhugel's narrative.—Sir W. Scott: Anne of Geierstein
(time, Edward IV.).
Caspar, a man who sold himself to Zamiel the Black
Huntsman. The night before the expiration of his life-lease, he
bargained for a respite of three years, on condition of bringing Max
into the power of the fiend. On the day appointed for the
prize-shooting, Max aimed at a dove but killed Caspar, and Zamiel
carried off his victim to "his own place."—Weber's opera,
Der Freischüis (1822). (The Reader's Handbook of Famous
Names in Fiction, &c., Brewer, 1899).
