CATHBATH. The
same as Old Irish Cathbad
(q.v.), which is probably a "warrior" name. The Druid
Cathbad was a fénnid (warrior). Also see A.S. Caedbaed.
... In Chaldee, BTR signifies After,
and in the Arabic BAD means "After, Afterwards," says
Mr. Richardson. The origin, from which this Arabic word is
derived, will be manifest from the next term in Mr. Richardson's
Dictionary, under the same form BAID, BAAD, BUAD, &c. signifying
"Little, mean, Vile. Any thing in which there is
little Good;" which brings us directly to BASE and BAD. The
term likewise means "Perishing, Death," which brings us to the
Celtic BATH, and BAS. The succeeding term is BADan, Afterwards,
BUDAN leka, Evil be to thee... (Etymologicon Universale,
Whiter, v.2, 1825).
Cathbath,
the Druid of Conchobar's court; he prophesied of Deirdre at her birth,
and weakened the children of Usnech by his spells. According to
the earliest accounts, he was the real father of Conchobar. His
son Geanain was also a Druid. The character of the Gaelic Druids
may be inferred to some extent from their miracles, which may be
described "as mostly atmospheric, consisting in such feats as
bringing on a heavy snow, palpable darkness, or a great storm, such as
the ones by means of which a Druid tried to effect the shipwreck of St.
Columba on Loch Ness."—"Hib. Lect.," p. 224. (Fled
Bricrend: the Feast of Bricriu, Henderson, 1899).
