CEPHAS. Biblical.
[Aramaic Kepha = "a rock" or "stone," a word
for which the Apostle John substitutes Petros
= "Peter" as the Greek equivalent].
An
appellation given by Jesus to the Apostle Simon. It was from it
that his best-known name Peter arose. [Peter.]
(John i. 42; 1 Cor. i. 12; iii. 22; ix. 5; xv. 5; Gal. ii. 9.) The
R.V. thus words the first of these passages, "Thou shalt be called
Cephas, which is by interpretation Peter." On the margin
there is the name, "That is Rock or Stone." (The Sunday
School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894)
