CHAMA (חָמָא). Aramaic
form of biblical Ham
(q.v.), meaning "black," "burned," "hot," or
"warm."
... The legend of Memnon in
Assyria ("Eoasque acies et nigri Memnonis arma,") and in
Æthiopia sub-Ægypto, and the Arab name of the statue of Memnon
(viz.
Chama or Ham,) would point to connection between these countries... (Outlines
of Lectures on Ancient History, Abraham, 1850)
"... For the Holy One,
blessed be He, has only created this world with loving-kindness and
mercy, and it rests with us to learn from the ways of God."
Thus said Rabbi Chama b. Chaninah, "... Walk in the
attributes of God (or rather make his attributes the rule for thy
conduct)..." (Some Aspects of Rabbinic Theology, Schechter,
1909)
