CHEMOSH. Biblical.
[Hebrew and Moabite Kemosh = "subduer," from Kamash
= "to subdue"].
An idol
worshipped by the Moabites and by the Ammonites (Numb. xxi. 29; Judg. xi.
24), especially by the former, Molech being the distinctive god of the
Ammonites. Solomon erected a high place for Chemosh "in the
hill that is before Jerusalem" (1 Kings xi. 7). This was
afterwards defiled by Josiah (2 Kings xxiii. 13; cf. Jer. xlviii. 7).
(The Sunday School Teacher's Bible Manual, Hunter, 1894).
