CHIGARU. African
name meaning "like a large dog," from Chinyanja chigaru (a
large dog). (A Grammar of Chinyanja, Henry, 1904). Cf.
Luganda Bbwaddene.
... The word mudzi,
generally translated "village," is often used of a village in
one sense, and even applied to the towns of Europeans; but, in fact, it
corresponds to the Zulu umuzi, which means a family habitation—what
we call a kraal—and can also be used for "family circle,"
"relatives," &c. So that the village of Ntumbi was
really made up of the kraals of Champiti, Ndabankazi, Chona, Mambala,
Chigaru, and four or five others. Champiti was the headman (mkulu)
of the place, which was subject to Chatantumba... (The
Gentleman's Magazine, v.283, Jul-Dec, 1897).
