CHUNIMUND.
Old German variant of Teutonic Kunimund
(q.v.), meaning "able protection." This was the name of a king of
the Suevi Langobards, 6th cent. (History of Christian Names, Yonge,
1884)
... During this visit, Alboin beheld
Rosamond, the beautiful daughter of Chunimund; and soon after he demanded
her of her father in marriage. Chunimund haughtily refused him; and
Alboin immediately collected an army, and fell upon the Gepidæ, whom he
utterly destroyed. He carried off Rosamond as prisoner, and obliged
her to marry him. Chunimund had been killed in the contest; and his
head cut off by Alboin's command, and the skull converted into a drinking
