CIARÁN.  Old Irish name meaning "little black one," from Gaelic ciar "black," and the diminutive suffix -an.  Also spelled Cearan, Ceirin, and Kieran.  See note under Piran.  This was the name of one of twelve bishops whom St. Patrick consecrated. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
