CYNYR. Arthurian.
The father of sir Kai.
A Welsh form of Irish Conaire
(q.v.), meaning "hound of slaughter." Also spelled Kyner.
... Cynyr was the son of
Gwyndeg ab Seithenin, and the husband of Anna, daughter of Gwrthefyr
Fendigaid (Vortimer). He was the father, besides Non, of
Guistlianus or Gwestlan, a pre-Davidian bishop in Menevia, Sadwrn Hen,
Gwen, the mother of Cybi, and Banhadlen, the mother of Ailbe. Caer
Gawch is therein identified with Pebidiog, but it is rather strange that
no trace of either Caer Gawch or Cynyr has been found in Dewisland.
The name Cynyr is equated with the Irish Conaire; and the lesser Dyfed
of those days was in all probability strongly Goidelic, for it was not
ruled over by the Cuneddan family... (The Lives of the British Saints,
Baring-Gould, v.2, 1908)
