DANU. The name of
an Irish goddess of the Tuatha de Danaan (tribe of Danu), or tribe of
Sidhe (fairies). Her name is probably from Celtic dana,
meaning "bold, daring," also "a poet." See Dana.
Tuatha de
Danaan (tribe of Danu), in Irish myth, the descendants of the goddess Danu.
They invaded Ireland from a magic cloud and drove the aboriginal Firbolgs
into Connaught, taking for themselves the richest provices in the
island. They were a beautiful race, highly skilled as smiths,
artisans and physicians, and as poets and magicians. In their turn
the Danaans were conquered by the Sons of Miled (Milesians), and withdrew
into the realm of faery, where they still reside in immortal bliss.
There are stories which tell how mortals are sometimes taken to this
enchanted land, where they live for years, which pass like a single night.
