| DRAGANA (Драгана). Feminine
form of Slavic Dragan
(q.v.), meaning "beloved, dear." Usage: Croatia, Macedonia,
Serbia, Yugoslavia.
"The
Janissary and the Fair Dragana."
....
The young Janissary was
sitting in the court-yard.
He looked down, he looked up.
Out of the black earth a blue fire burns,
But from the blue sky a rain of blood falls.
The young Janissary was frightened,
So that he called to fair Dragana,
And said sadly to Dragana,—
"Oh! Dragana, my slave,
I will ask you to tell me truly,
Have you a brother or have you a sister?
Have you a father, have you a mother?"
But Dragana answered him clearly,—
"I have a father, I have a mother;
I have a brother, I have a sister."
"Where is thy brother? has he been carried into slavery?"
Dragana answered him sadly:
"When they cam to the Wallachian land
The Turks killed the young Bulgarians,
And my brother was taken by that army.
Now thirty years have passed
Since I saw my brother."
