DUESSA.
In Spencer's Faerie Queene, this is the name of an enemy of Una
(one-ness), meaning "two-ness." It was probably inspired
by the Irish Duvessa, but
derived from Latin duo "two" and esse "to
be."
... "I that
do seeme not I, Duessa am" (1 v 26). Her name (L. duo
two + esse to be) means two-ness, doubleness, and duplicity, in
contrast to the One Truth of which she is the division and attempted
destruction. (The Spenser Encyclopedia, Hamilton, 1990)
