DAGAN. "The
Exalted One." Coequal
in antiquity with the cult of Anu in Assyria. (Religion of Babylonia &
Assyria, Jastrow, 1898). Dagan appears as a god before the time
of Hammurabi. It has been suggested that he is the same as
Philistine Dagon. He seems to have been regarded as a god of the
earth. (An Encyclopedia of Religions, Canney, 1921)
... The Akkadian god-name Dagan
means "the Exalted-one" (Ak. da, "summit" + gan,
"the participle of the substantive verb." Sayce).
Various Semitic etymologies were subsequently attached to the word, such
as dâgân, "corn" (Sanchou. i. 5) and dag,
"fish."... (Researches
into the Origin of the Primitive Constellations of the Greeks,
Phoenicians, and Babylonians, Brown, v.1, 1899).
