Anglo-Saxon name composed of the Old English elements deor
"deer, wild; violent," or, deore "dear,
beloved," and wine "beloved, friend." Most authors
render it "dear friend." (A Handy Poetical
Anglo-Saxon Dictionary, Baskervill, 1885)
94. Deorwine, later Derwine;
Searle gives both forms. Hence M.E. Derewyn
(1273), and modern Darwin.
It is probable that there is another Darwin, of local origin. For
the ar, cf. A.S. Deorling, modern Darling. (Transactions of
