... The History of Lady
Freemore... As it is necessary, however, for young Freemore to make the
tour of Europe, he is obliged to leave his cousin. Emily, in his
absence, makes a conquest of a lord Derwyn, but pleads a prior
engagement to him. Freemore returns, but violently in love with another
woman, whom he met with abroad. His father consents to his
marrying her. Emily being thus disappointed, is prevailed on, tho'
with great difficulty, to become lady Derwyn; and endeavours to
find him as agreeable as the man to whom her heart had been so long
engaged. (The Critical Review, Smollett, v.28, 1769)
