DINAS EMRYS. Arthurian
legend name of a fortified city given to Merlin Ambrosius by Vortigern
after his celebrated prophecy concerning the fate of Britain. The
name means "fortified city of Ambrosius," from Gaelic dinas
"city," and Emrys, the Welsh form of Ambrosius.
Dinas Emrys.—Dinas, a
fortified city; Emrys, the surname of a celebrated bard of the
fifth century, who was known by the name of Merddin Emrys, or
Ambrosius. King Gwrtheyrn presented the place to Emrys, and hence
