DIOGENES (Διογένης). "God-born"
or "Heaven-born."
A Greco-Egyptian priest (?), the father of Aria, the Canephoros of the
goddess Arsinoe-Philadelphus, at Memphis, under Ptolemy V.
(An Archaic Dictionary, Cooper, 1876).
... The regular declension of
Zeus made Dios the genitive case; and, thus Diogenes, &c.,
ought, perhaps, to be referred to him; but the more poetical, and,
therefore, most probably the older, form, was Zenos in the
genitive; and as Dios also meant heaven, the above name seems to be
better explained as heaven-born, leaving to Zeus only those that retain
the same commencement. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
