DOROTHEUS.  Latin form of Greek Dorotheos (q.v.), meaning "gift of God."  Preferred in the West over Theodorus. (History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).

    Dorotheus, a painter, who executed for Nero a copy of the Aphrodite Anadyomene of Apelles.  He lived therefore about A.D. 60. (A Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, Smith, 1890)
