Origin of the name DORUS.
Etymology of the name DORUS.
Meaning of the baby name DORUS.

DORUS.  Latin form of Greek Doros (q.v.), a son of Hellen (q.v.), meaning "gift."  Also see Doris.

According to Herodotus, "while the former" (i.e. the Hellenes of the Dorian stem) "had very often changed their seat; for, under the reign of Deucalion they inhabited the country of Phthiotis; and in the time of Dorus, the son of Hellen, possessed that region which is called Istiaeotis, lying at the foot of mounts Ossa and Olympus.  From thence being expelled by the Cadmaeans, they betook themselves to Macednum on mount Pindus, which place they afterwards abandoned for another settlement in Dryopis; and again, changing their country, came to the Peloponnesus, where they were called Dorians."...
... Herodotus does not state so expressly as Apollodorus (l. 7. 3.), that the name of Dorians was derived from that of Dorus; yet the former manifestly gives us to understand this, when he places Dorus at the head of the emigration of this tribe... (Bibliotheca Classica, Lemprière, 1833)
