DRUAS. Arthurian.
A giant. Either from drôs/drôsi,
"glans, glandula," or HG druos/truos, "blain,
plague." Cf. Teu. durs, and O.N. thurs,
"giant." The words for giant express an inordinate desire
for eating and drinking, precisely what exhibits itself in the Homeric
cyclop. (Althochdeutscher
Sprachschatz, Graff, 1840; Teutonic Mythology, Grimm, 1883).
Agravain, coup d' essai,
killed Druas, a formidable giant, but in turn was vanquished by Sornehan,
the brother of the deceased. (History of Fiction, Dunlop, 1876)
