DRYSTAN. Arthurian.
A knight and lover of Essyllt.
The same as Tristan
(also see Tristram).
From Welsh Trwst ap Taran (tumult, the son of
thunder), itself of Pictish origin, from Drust
(q.v.) or Trust
(q.v.), meaning "loud noise, tumult" or poetically "herald,
proclaimer." (History of Christian Names, Yonge,
1884). But, also see Leith's note under Feridun.
... the Welsh Triads
bring Arthur in contact with Drystan the gal-ofydd or
"war-leader" of March and the lover of Essyllt, that is to
say, Malory's Tristram, kynge Mark, and Isoud
respectively. Drystan is represented sending March's swineherd on
an errand to Essyllt, Drystan in the meantime taking upon himself the
charge of the swine. The story then makes Arthur, assisted by
March, Kei and Bedwyr, attempt to get possession of some of the swine by
every means in their power, but all in vain, so that Drystan came to be
styled one of "the Three stout Swineherds of the Isle of
Britain." (Le morte d'Arthur, Malory-Rhys, 1908)
