governor of the Assyrian cities which were reconquered from the Elamites
by Sennacherib. Dur-an, an Assyrian city on the borders of
Minni where Assurbanipal collected his forces before defeating Ahsera, the

DURÁN. Spanish
name, derived from Latin Durandus
(q.v.), from durans, meaning "enduring, lasting." The
French have Durand; the
Italians have Durante and Dante.
Carlos Durán Cartín (d. 1924), was a doctor of medicine
who served as President of Costa Rica for a period of six months, from
1889 to 1890. Manuel Durány Bas (d. 1907),
