EIGYR.
Arthurian. The mother of king Arthur. From Welsh eigyr, meaning "the virgin." (Britannia
After the Romans, Herbert, v.2, 1841)
... there was one remarkable
blunder made by the chroniclers of the middle ages, which was the
attributing to this prince the parentage of the mythological Arthur;
that is, they make him the son of Uthyr Bendragon by Eigyr; who, aided
by the skill of Merddin, was introduced to her in the shape of her
husband; and they also make Uthyr to reign as the 86th king of Britain,
between Ambrosius and Arthur, yet the triads are silent about such a
name altogether. But this Uthyr Bendragon, or Wonder the Supreme
Leader, and Eigyr, or Generating Power, were the parents of the
mythological Arthur; and not of the prince of that name, whose origin
has been already noticed, and which has nothing of fable in it. (The
Cambridge Biography, Pughe, 1803)
