ELISCHEBA (אֱלִישֶׁבַע).
Variant spelling of Hebrew Elisheba
(q.v.), meaning "God's oath," or "God hath sworn,"
i.e. an appeal to his covenant.
Aaron's wife was Elischeba, meaning
God hath sworn, i.e. an appeal to his covenant. It recurred again in
the priestly family in the Gospel period, and had become, in its Greek
form,
Ελισαβετ
(Elisabet); in Latin, Elisabeth.
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
... And all might have been well if
it had not been for Frøkenen, the daughter of the house. I
grew fonder of her every day. Her name was Elischeba,
Elisabeth. No remarkable beauty, perhaps; but she had red lips,
and a blue, girlish glance that made her pretty to see... (Wanderers,
Hamsun, 1922)
