ENID.
Arthurian. The wife of Geraint.
Welsh, from a Celtic word for "soul." French Enide.
Swan renders the name "spotless
purity." See notes below.
... The soul is to be found in
Greece, as Psyche, and nowhere else but in the Welsh Enid...
(History of Christian Names, Yonge, 1884)
ENID =
spotless purity, was, as a name, first borne by one of the heroines of
King Arthur's court. Enid was the personification of all that is
noble and true in womanhood, and conspicuous also for her resplendent
beauty and noble bearing. The bard of the Middle Ages could pay no
higher compliment to his Mistress than to call her a "second
Enid."—And there was no maiden more esteemed than she in the
Island of Britain. The Mabinogion. (Ibid., Swan, 1905)
The brave Geraint, a knight of
Arthur's court,
A tributary prince of Devon, one
Of that great Order of the Table Round,
Had married Enid, Yniol's only child,
And loved her, as he loved the light of Heaven.
And as the light of Heaven varies, now
At sunrise, now at sunset, now by night
With moon and trembling stars, so loved Geraint
To make her beauty vary day by day,
In crimsons and in purples and in gems.
And Enid, but to please her husband's eye,
Who first had found and loved her in a state
Of broken fortunes, daily fronted him
In some fresh splendour; and the Queen herself,
Grateful to Prince Geraint for service done,
Loved her, and often with her own white hands
Array'd and deck'd her, as the loveliest,
Next after her own self, in all the court.
(The Poetical Works of Alfred Tennyson, 1873)
