EPONA.
Celtic name derived from the Gaulish word epos, meaning "horse."
Epona, a
beautiful girl, the fruit of a man's union with a mare. (Bibliotheca
Classica, Lempriere, v.1, 1792)
Epona, the
Celtic horse-goddess, may be equated with the Chanteur or Centaur
illustrated on so many of our "degraded" British coins, and
Banstead Downs, upon which Ep's Home stands, may be associated with Epona,
and with the shaggy little ponies which ranged in Epping
Forest. (Archaic England, Bayley, 1920)
... The goddess Epona (whose
name is formed from the Gaulish word epos "horse") is
figured on a great number of monuments and generally in the form of a
woman seated on a mare of mettlesome action. One of these
statuettes is found in the Cabinet des Medailles of Paris, and the
pedestal is provided with an opening forming a box intended to receive
the offerings of the faithful. The Gauls were great horse rearers;
and Epona presided over this occupation, and doubtless over horsemanship
in general. (Celtic Magazine, v.12, 1887)
