ERMESINDA.
Spanish Gothic name of Teutonic origin, meaning "public
strength," from ermen
"public; world" and swind/suint (Gothic swinths)
"strength." Also see Hermesind.
(History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884).
Doña Gisberga, or, Ermesinda,
the daughter of Barnard Roger, conde of Bigorra, and of his wife,
Garsenda. In 1036, she married Don Ramiro, the first to bear the
title of "king of Aragon." This princess gave birth to
three sons, Sancho, Ramirez, and Garcia, who became bishop of Iaca; and
to two daughters, Sancha, who married the count of Toulouse; and Teresa,
who married Beltran, Count of Provence. Ermesinda died on the 1st
of December, 1059, and was buried in the monastery of St. John de la
Pena. (Annals of the Queens of Spain, George, 1850)
