ERNESTINE is
the natural feminine of the name Ernst or (English) Ernest. The
name is a Teutonic one, and is probably in the majority of cases given
under the impression that it means earnest or serious; but
Mr. H. A. Long, among others, does not hesitate to derive it from Arn
= eagle.
Arnust
was the old German name, which seems in its journey to Italy to have got
changed into Ernesto,
of which name there are examples as early as the eighth century in that
country.
In Germany the name soon began to appear in its
altered form, in the persons of sundry dukes and Margraves, and, thus
introduced, steadily gained ground, until now, when it is one of the
most popular of all German names and is becoming almost as common in
England, though here we have not taken kindly to the feminine—Ernestine—which
may, however, occasionally be recognised under its diminutive Tine.
In the twelfth century the Minnesinger Heinrich von
Veldig sang of the adventures of Duke Ernst, the son-in-law of
the Emperor Konrad II., who went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to
expiate the crime of murdering his feudal lord. (Girls' Christian
Names, Swan, 1905).
