ESCLAIRMOND. French
name, meaning "light of the world," from esclair
"lightning, a sudden blaze or flash of light"; also
"celandine, swallowort," and monde, "the world, the
universe, all visible things"; also, "great number of
people." Also spelled Esclairmonde,
which see. (A French and English Dictionary, Cotgrave, 1673).
In the Middle Ages, The Garden
of the Rose was merely another term for Eden, Paradise, Peter's Orchard,
or Heaven's Walls, and the Lady of the Rose Garden was unquestionably
the same as the Ruler of the Isles called Fortunate—
—a Queen
So beautiful that with one single beam
Of her great beauty, all the country round
Is rendered shining.
Some
accounts state that the bride of Oberon was known as Esclairmond, a name
which seemingly is one with eclair monde or "Light of the
World". (Archaic England, Bayley, 1920)
