ETHELIND. A
variant of Anglo-Saxon Æthelind
(q.v.), meaning "noble snake," from Old English æðel
"noble" and lind "serpent, snake." (History of Christian Names,
Yonge, 1884). But see Charnock's note below.
A female name which appears to
be of modern origin. Miss Yonge compares it with the names
Adelinde and Odelind, and translates it "noble snake."
But the name means rather noble and mild; this is confirmed by Meidinger,
who under lind, mild, soft, gentle, among several male and female names
gives the female name Ethelinde. Conf. also the Francic name
Adelind. (Prænomina, Charnock, 1882)
