ETHELINDA. A
Latinized form of Anglo-Saxon Æthelind
(q.v.), meaning "noble snake," from Old English æðel
"noble" and lind "serpent, snake." Some
authors render it "noble
maiden." Also see Charnock's note under Ethelind.
And see Ethelinde. (History of
Christian Names, Yonge, 1884; Girls' Christian Names, Swan, 1905).
... The Kate's ready pencil
portrayed the family, as jagged in their drapery as the flames; and
presently Lady Ethelinda appeared before a counter (such a
counter!) buying very peculiar garments for the sufferers. (Countess
Kate, Yonge, 1865)
